Week 34: Maturing Systems
Baby is about the size of Cantaloupe (450mm head-to-heel)
All major organ systems are maturing simultaneously. The lungs are producing adequate surfactant for breathing, though a few more weeks of maturation is ideal. The central nervous system is mature enough to control breathing, body temperature, and other vital functions. Vernix caseosa thickens. The baby weighs approximately 2.1kg (4.7 lbs).
You may experience 'lightning crotch' — sudden sharp pains in the pelvis as nerves are compressed. Swelling may be more noticeable. The nesting instinct can be intense — you may feel an urgent need to clean, organize, and prepare. Fatigue is considerable.
What is important now
Perineal massage can begin now (evidence supports starting at 34-36 weeks to reduce tearing during birth). Discuss pain management options for labor with your provider. Confirm your birth plan and who will be your birth partner.
Common symptoms
- sudden severe swelling with headache — emergency evaluation
- decreased fetal movement — contact provider immediately
Wellness this week.
Nutrition
Final organ maturation and energy stores
- Continue balanced diet with emphasis on protein, iron, calcium
- Begin eating 6 dates daily if interested (from 36 weeks — start building the habit)
- Complex carbs for energy
- Small, frequent meals
Exercise
Movement
Gentle movement and birth preparation exercises
Sleep
7-9 hours (sleep when you can)
Position: Left side with comprehensive pillow support
· Accept that perfect sleep is unlikely — any rest is valuable
· Use relaxation audio or meditation apps for falling back asleep
Mental wellness
Mindfulness
The nesting instinct is powerful and normal. Channel it, but don't exhaust yourself. Delegate tasks you can.
“Every system in your baby's body is maturing — they're putting the finishing touches on their readiness to meet you.”

Checkpoint 2 — Screening Ultrasound
Choice between a basic biometric scan or detailed organ scan. Measures head circumference, abdominal circumference, femur length, and checks placental position.
GoalAssess fetal anatomy and growth, check for structural abnormalities, and verify placental location.
Week 28
6 weeks ago- routine
Checkpoint 1 — GDM screening
- routine
Checkpoint 2 — Rhogam if Rh-negative
Week 29
5 weeks ago- routineWeeks 29–32
Checkpoint 3 — Screening Ultrasound

GoalConfirm appropriate growth trajectory and baby's position for delivery planning.
Week 35
Next week- self pay igelWeeks 35–37
Checkpoint 1 — GBS Testing — Self-pay/IGeL
Rectovaginal swab to screen for Group B Streptococcus colonization. If positive, IV antibiotics are given during labor to prevent neonatal infection.
GoalIdentify GBS carriers to enable prophylactic treatment during delivery.
Safety: Sudden severe swelling combined with headache or visual changes is an emergency. Always report decreased fetal movement promptly.
